Federal Highway Administration Local Aid Support Presents

Innovation Exchange Webinar on Evaluation of New Data Collection Technology

for Visitor Use Patterns on Federal Lands

Thursday, September 16, 2021 | 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET

Recreation travel is fundamentally different than commuter or freight travel patterns.  Federal Land managers are interested in better data to understand how to manage visitor travel while providing great visitor experiences and protecting resources.  The Evaluate Use of New Technology for Visitor Use Patterns study evaluated whether this new technology would advance understanding of visitor travel patterns and origin/destination for recreation travel.  The National Park Service, Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service cooperated to conduct the pilot at four parks/units:

  1. Arches National Park (National Park Service)
  2. Colorado National Monument (National Park Service)
  3. Joshua Tree National Park (National Park Service)
  4. Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service)

In this Innovation Exchange webinar, National Park Service transportation staff and VHB (project consultant) will share their demonstration project outcomes and lessons learned. Areas of focus include:

  • Recreation Travel Issues for Federal Land Management Agencies
  • Why Bluetooth Technology?
  • Pilot Deployment Issues
  • Case Study: Bluetooth Pilot Deployment at Joshua Tree National Park
  • Findings and Lessons Learned
